Yak (Bos grunniens)
The Yak is a long haired bovine found throughout the Himalayan region of South Central Asia, the Tivbetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia. In addition to a large domestic population, there are a small number of vulnerable wild Yak.
The Yak is well adapted to high altitudes, having larger lungs and hearts than cattle found lower down , as well as greater capacity for transporting oxygen through their blood. The Yak is the beast of burden for the Himalayan mountains and our one is called Tensing.
Tensing is a very large animal with a superb temperment and enormous horns as can be seen in the accompanying photograph.
